Hi, I'm looking for info on Nicholas Stowers & family that
came in 1629 on the Lyons Welp with the Sprague family & stayed
& was presumeably buried at Rumney Marsh? I also have Tewksbury
or Tukesbury & Sturgis at roughly the same time. One had a farm
called Bryant Place; 1600's I believe. Thanks again, |

Any information regarding Dr John M. Doran of 680 Broadway Chelsea
Ma. He had twin boys born in 1913. One of them was my father. His
wife died after the birth of the twins. I have had no luck finding
information on him. |
|
I am looking for information about William S. Bartlet (his
spelling), who was rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Chelsea
in 1853 (or thereabouts) when he published a book entitled Frontier
Missionary, which is a biography of Rev. Jacob Bailey, Loyalist
Anglican clergyman who was banished from Kennebec, Maine, by a
revolutionary committee of public safety for praying for the King and
refusing to read the Declaration of Independence from the pulpit.
Bailey ended up in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, where I now live. I
am hoping to find information about Bartlet's life and education.
Thank you very much. |
|
Hi, My father was born in Chelsea in 1901 to Esther Smith and Carl
H Smith. I lived in Greenwood for awhile and was born in Malden in
1938. It is good to meet you all. I am looking for information on
William Currier and wife Mary. They had one daughter Esther Currier
Smith. My father was born in Chelsea on Sept 1, 1901 to Esther and
Carl Hamilton Smith. Any information would be apreciated. |

Hello, I'm Jon Cesolini, a member of the Williamsville fire
company in Northeastern Connecticut. It has been speculated that a
1922 Seagrave fire engine was purchased used from the Chelsea Fire
Department somewhere before WWII. The only reason I am writing is
that the 1931 photo of "engine #4" found on your fire
department history site resembles distinctly a photograph I have of
the Williamsville pumper mentioned. If you have any more information
on that particular apparatus, or if you have any information on the
disposition of it, or if I am simply completely wrong in my
assumptions, any of that would help. Thank you, |
|
I belong to a group of descendants of 21st Battalion CEF soldiers. We honour their memory in several ways, one of which is a photo tribute website at http://21st-battalion-2.tripod.com/page1.html. On that site, we have over 1200 photos of the soldiers and their graves. Would it be possible for one of your members to take a photo of the memorial at the Chelsea High School which is close enough to read the name "Robert T Murray", as well as a photo to show the overall view of the memorial? I would like to place those photos on our website to honour Pte Murray's service in the 21st Battalion CEF. Of course credit would be given to your Historical Society on our credits page along with a link to this website. These photos could be emailed to the enclosed address at alloyd@kos.net. I thank you for considering this request.
Resp: Photos have been sent, Thank You. |
|
I am looking for a copy of the Charter for Chelsea, Ma, and
possibly a copy or patch of the town seal for a friend of mine as a
gift. They should be suitible for framing. Do you have any
suggestions on where I might obtain such items? I thought it best to
start with you. |
|
Hi, I was born at Chelsea Naval in 1967. I was referred to
Virginia, but I am not sure what that means. Where in Virginia are my
birth records? I was born with a birthmark and taken away from my
mother for 3 days. I am trying to find out what medical procedures
they did just after birth. Resp: We are receiving a large number of request for birth records from the Naval Hospital. So far we have been able to determine that they must be obtained through the Navy Department. As soon as we are able to determine a more exact process for obtaining this information it will be posted on this website. |
|
I am interested in the surname Newell and any connection it has to
the town of Chelsea. Family legend has it that they owned land in the
town. Evelyn fidler cefidler@nb.sympatico.ca Resp: There is a large amonut of information on the name Newell and their association with Chelsea dating back to the 1600's. The name is also spelled Newhall in many records. The earliest recorded bit of information concerns Thomas Newell, who on October 26, 1686 brought suit against John Wiswall, for defamation against his wife Hannah. |

I am researching information on my 3xGreat Grandparents, Francis & Catherine Yelland, who lived in Chelsea for a time from about 1845 to 1859. A couple of questions: 1) I find them in the 1850 census, living there with 1 child my 2X great grandmother and a 17 year old apprentice. Is there any way to find out (from the census codes) where their home was located. I understand some sections of Chelsea from that period, may have become part of Revere? or Winthrop? 2) Francis Yelland was also a poet. He wrote a book of poems entitled: The Exile's Law and Other Poetry published in Boston in 1855. Do you by any chance have a copy of this book, or any other information regarding Francis or Catherine Yelland? Resp: Check the archives at the Chelsea Public Library. All records of Chelsea are kept there. 3) What were the names of Chelsea newspapers from @1850-60? Are they available for viewing? And would any of these publications have the initials C___ A____. (Francis referred to this possible publication in one of his poems.) Resp: "C" "A" may be the Chelsea Advertiser. The Newspapers page lists every newspaper that ever published in Chelsea. Click here 4) Where is the Chelsea Historical Society located and is it open to the public? If so what are the hours? Resp: Contact the Cary House, Chelsea, Ma. Free tours by request.
Thanks much for any information on this you might be able to provide... |
|
I enjoyed your site very much. The photo's that you show of homes
on Washington Avenue, does anyone know the house numbers? My
GreatGreat Grandparents lived at 204 Washington Avenue from around
1903 till the mid 1920's. It would be great if one your photo's was
of their home. Other photo's that would interest me would be of some
of the other homes they lived in 1886-131 Chester Avenue, 1887-1888
or longer at 35 Spencer, 1892-13 Silk Street, and 1899 - 13 Heard
Street. Also, what schools would have been in the Spencer/Washington
Avenue area (Grammer schools) I know, many questions. Any help would
be appreciated. Thank you Donna Murphy. |

Genealogist, desperately seeking an old photo of Potter's Bakery
in Chelsea, or the Arlington Street Bakery also run by the Potter family. |

I was born in CHELSEA MEM. HOSPITAL in 1951 any ideas for locating
a birth certificate. Thanks ,D.B. Resp: Records of the Chelsea Memorial Hospital are now part of the Massachusetts General Hospital records archive. Contact the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Ma. |

What a fantastic website! I came upon it while looking for the
name of the order of nuns who taught me at Our Lady of Assumption
School, and I look forward to learning more about Chelsea. I was born
there in 1971 and lived there until 1992, living on Broadway, Spencer
Ave., Chester Ave., Heard Street and finally Lash Street in Chelsea.
I went to Mary C. Burke for kidnergarten, Assumption for middle
school, and after getting kicked out of St. Rose High School I
attended CHS for a couple months, then went to Northeast Vocational,
where I graduated. I, too, feel that Chelsea is a haunted city, and I
certainly continue to be haunted by it. I now live in California, and
have few family members left in the city. I wrote a book about my
rather troubled experience of growing up in Chelsea called The
Chelsea Whistle. Resp: They may have been the nuns of the Holy Union of the Sacred Heart who were the first nuns to teach at the school. See Asumption Church webpage. |
|
I love the website! My great-grandparents came to Chelsea in the
mid 1800's and I am also from Chelsea. The names I am researching are
Sullivan, Hannabury, Porter and Twomey. I noticed that there is a
writer Elizabeth Porter Gould that is from Chelsea. I found out that
she wrote for the New England Magazine and the Bay State Monthly from
1884-1894. Do you have any more information on her Thanks! |
|
I grew up in Chelsea and graduated from the high school in 1990. I
loved that building. I was trying to remember the quote carved upon
the building exterior... force greater than power, wisdom greater
than knowledge. Does anyone remember? Perhaps a photo exists
somewhere. I would be grateful to know, as it meant so much to me
while a student there (just before BU took control and when it was
hard being a student there). Those words bore into my psyche and
really carried me through. |
|
This site was one of the best I have seen, Excellent job |
|
My grandfathers family owned a furniture store in Chelsea in the
late 1920's or early 1930's. My dad remembers visiting the store but
can't remember where it was located. Does anyone know the name of the
store or the surname of the family that owned it? |
|
I grew up in Chelsea and still have plenty of family there. This
site was really fascinating. One of the guest book signers mentioned
"two" cemeteries in Chelsea. I know of the Garden on
Shurtleff and Central, but where is the other? Resp: The second cemetary referred to is probably the Naval Hospital Cemetary. In 1918, the Naval Hospital ceased burial in it's cemetery on the hospital reservation due to overcrowding. Arrangements were made to purchase an area of the Woodlawn Cemetery for burial from the Naval Hospital. Exhuming the remains for transfer from the hospital cemetery to Woodlawn began early Spring and was completed on August 5, 1920. |
|
I grew up in Chelsea up to like 1987 does anyone know what
happened to the records of students at Williams School and if anyone
knows how I can get some pics thanks Resp: All student records are with the Chelsea School Department. |
|
Hello, was looking for the date of the Chelsea Fire ( 1973 ) and
found your site. It is terrific, you have done a wonderful job.
BRAVO, Michael |
|
I'm looking to find out the business of Nathan W. Snow of Chelsea
City in the period 1870 - 1880. His daughter Annie Constance Snow
(1870-1921) lived in the famous Tryon colony down here in North
Carolina circa 1900 to 1920, and we have been able here to learn
nothing about the Mass. background of Miss Snow. If you have any
picture of Nathan Snow's house in Chelsea, his business records, or
any Chelsea school records related to Annie C. Snow, we would deeply
appreciate them. Thank you, Michael McCue, Polk County Historical
Association PO Box 250, Columbus NC 28722 |

I would like to know about a house on Garland St. #75, I lived
there in my early life and was told that it originally had a still
built into it during Prohibition. I was told that there were a lot of
stills built into houses in Chelsea at that time. Also, I understand
that this house was built for a mayor, which one I do not know and
would like to find the name. I attended Prattville School in the
50's, my mother graduated from CHS. My grandfather, Edward Rood,
worked as director of the old age program, then went on to be head of
welfare. Thank you! Resp: During the Prohibition quite a number of homes had stills hidden in the cellars. |
|
I'd like more information about the old Chelsea Pool. Thank you
for this great website. I lived in Chelsea from 1966 - 1978. I always
felt it was a haunted place. |
|
Do you know if there was a Lime Street in Chelsea about 1910? If
so -- was it in the near vicinity of Broadway? Appreciate your help. Resp: There was never a Lime Street in Chelsea. There is a Lynn Street. |
|
I'm looking for info and or pictures of the Chelsea Yacht Club as
our data is incomplete and we are looking forward to assembling some
sort of journal for our current and future members. |

Web site excellent about the history of Chelsea. There are two
topics if you could look into. The Chelsea Housing Authority
(Projects) the history and pictures. Also my father was employed by
Chelsea Contracting trucking company. I believe that was on Third St.
In the fortys and fiftys. I do have home movies from that era that
shows this business in a residential area. |

This site is wonderful. I am from Chelsea. My family was there
from the early 1900's until the 1950's. |
|
Hi -- I had relatives who lived in Chelsea for many years. Have
you people any information on the "Labor Lyceum" or
"Harry's Corner"? Thanks. |
|
I grew up in Chelsea and graduated CHS in 1979. I was fortunate to
have lived in four different parts of the city and have very good
memories of the people I knew. I am also proud to say "I'm from
Chelsea". When my Father was in the Navy we lived at the Naval
Hospital from 1970 -1973. Does anyone know if the tunnels that
connected the main hospital to the other parts of the base are still
there? There has been many bldgs. added there over the years and
that's something I've always been curious about. |
|
Hello, Resp: See the Acadians page. The Acadians were the first French speaking people to settle in Chelsea during the ethnic cleansing of Nova Scotia. |
|
I was born in Chelsea Memorial Hospital in 1943. Although I
haven't lived in Chelsea since about 1944 (we moved to Malden for the
duration of the war, then moved permanently to California), I have
always considered myself a Chelsea-ite. I'm particularly interested
in learning where I can find pictures of Arlington Street in the
1920s-1940s. I'm researching that neighborhood because that's where
my mother and her siblings grew up. Best to all. |
|
My Family, all nine (9) of us grew up in Chelsea. I'm the oldest,
we lived in the Prattvilla area. Most of you should know my brothers
, Gorden, (gordy) William (Billy) Henry ( piggy) who still lives in
Chelsea, Marie, Theresa and Jimmy. They were great sportsmen. My
brother Bob (Capt CFD)Retired , Frank, Gorden & Henry are on the
Chelsea High School Hall of Fame. Chelsea was a great place to come
home to while in the service. The melting pot of all nations and
proud of it. Two of us were in the Navy and the rest Army. This is a
great site. |
|
What happened to Merrit Park in the Mill Hill area of Chelsea? Resp: It is now the Mary C. Burke School Complex |
|
My father Gasker ("Jerry") Hudson now lives with me and
will be 94 on Sept 30. He lived and worked in Chelsea starting in
1916 until retiring to NC in 1976. I was born there in 1949, and left
the city in 1971. Between the two of us, boy do we have some stories
and memories! Only a few years ago, he told me the story of his
experience with Charles Lindbergh during his motorcade through
Chelsea in July 1927 when he was 15! |
|
I was fortunate enough to visit the Gov. Bellingham-Cary House
today, and I just wanted to commend those who ran the open house. It
was a wonderful experience taking a step back in time like that. I
really did feel transported to a different place. The tour guides
were extremely friendly and knowledgable. It is unfortunate this
house cannot be open more regularly, but it is understandable. They
have a tremendous undertaking, with all the restoration the home
still needs. I can't wait for the next event though, and I look
forward to seeing some of the treasures they have locked away until
further restoration is done. Again, thank you to the Governor
Bellingham-Cary House Association for a lovely, informative afternoon. |

Nice web site about Chelsea. I was born and raised in Chelsea and
so were my parents. My parents always told me about that bridge that
cut thru the city. They had to move four times during construction.
The 1908 fire and the bridge cutting thru the heart of the city
ruined Chelsea. It is sad to think that Chelsea had all this
misfortune. If you noticed the bridge takes sharpe left around
Williams school instead of going straight out near Carter street thru
Everett. My parents always said the politicans at the time sold
Chelsea out. |
|
Hi, Chelsea, I'm Fred Butler who used to live in Saugus and who
has a lot of family ties from the area. One of my ancestors was
Nathaniel Oliver who married Martha Hobbs on 30 Nov 1709. Her father
is listed as Colonel Hobbs. Do you have a first name on him or any
other information about the family. It would be greatly appreciated.
I am now living in Lompoc, California but miss the old hometown
greatly especially the New England food (Clams and Lobsters), Many of
my Oliver forefathers are buried in the old Rumney Marsh Burial
Ground such as William Oliver and his son William, Jr. Hope all is
well at home. Resp: Captain Nathaniel Oliver, son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Brattle) Oliver. Married Martha Hobbs on Nov. 30, 1709. They had three sons, Nathaniel, Jr., a lawyer who resided in Chelsea and married Mercy Wendell in 1742 and then his second wife, Sarah Hill in 1763. He died on December 26, 1769. The second son, Peter, was a sea captain and died at sea in the West Indies. Third son, William, was a farmer in Chelsea. He died in 1782. |

I'm looking for the death and burial of my great grandfahter
Charles J. Wagner b. 1855 d. ? I have his death as Aug 3, 1894 but
there's no death certificate for anyone by that name in that year. My
cousin has his death-form for a death record, Chelsea, MA (never
filled out or filed) died at Marine Hospital, Chelsea, MA with that
date for his death. I'm beginning to believe that it was a false
document and that Charles lived beyond 1894. He and my great
grandmother were not getting along well, maybe she had the record
made by a friend and abandoned him, heading out west. They resided in
E. Boston but his medical records and death are from Chelsea. He was
a mariner by trade. I'm in Oregon and have been trying to find a
volunteer to help me find him, but haven't succeeded, so far. thank
you for your time. I realize you may not be able to help me, but I
thought I'd post anyway. |
|
Hello, I am trying to find out if my ancestor, Micah Orcutt is
buried in Garden Cemetery. He was bom in 1756 in Cohasset and died,
according to some records, in Chelsea on Dec.18, 1842. Any help would
be appreciated. Resp. The Pratt House on Washington Ave. was torn down in 1953. See Prattville section of this website for more information. |

I just Moved to Admirals Hill in July after many years in upstate
New York. I find the area to be fascinating from an historical
aspect. Can you suggest any titles of books etc. on the history of
Chelsea/Admirals Hill? Your website is great and I would love to know
more, Thanks! |
|
I am loolking for some burial records from Chelsea Garden
Cemetery. How would I go about obtaining them? |

"You Can Take The Person Out of Chelsea, But You Can NEVER Take Chelsea Out of The Person"!!
Born, raised and educated in Chelsea, my family tree consisted of
the Slotnick/Rosenfield/Brodie families, which resided in Chelsea
from 1885-2000 ... 115 years!! Joseph Slotnick arrived in Chelsea in
1885 and started the J. Slotnick Contracting Company in the 1890s
which just recently ceased operations. The Brodie's arrived in the
early 1900's and own/operated The Star Department Store on Broadway
through the 1930's. The cornerstone and mentor of our family was
Philip Rosenfield. The Rosenfield's arrived in Chelsea in the
late1890's approximately. Philip started the Philip Rosenfield Scrap
Iron Co. on 88 Elm Street. In 1946, he founded Phil's Glass Company
located on Carter Street, drirectly across from the old Chelsea
Stadium. His vision, legacy & corporation still remain at that
same site today, which has grown into The J.N. PHILLIPS AUTO GLASS CORPORATION. |

In the photo entitled 'Memorial Day 1948" outside City Hall,
the gentleman standing between Mayor Keating and Joseph Margolis is
Joseph Schultz. Mr. Schultz was the assistant to Joseph E. Henry at
the Shurtieff Junior High School before becoming the principal or
Headmaster at the Carter Junior High School. The other individual on
the top row, third from left, is my brother, Arthur Eckman, who was
serving on the school committee when this photo was taken. Resp. Thank you very much for the information, the web page picture has been updated. |

Dear Sir/ Madam: Resp. Shell did not maintain a terminal in Chelsea - possibly in Everett, MA |
|
Dear Sirs;I am interested in the clipper ship era of sail, and am
wondering if you have any records or pictures of ships built by
Jotham Stetson; especially the clipper "Beacon Light",
launched in 1855. She was sold to England later the same year,
renamed 'Light of the Age' and spent many years on the Australia run.
My g.grandparents came out to Sydney on her in 1859, which explains
my interest in her. |
|
Hi from Germany: I was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Chelsea

Naval hospital went. I was born there on November 16, 1956. I would

really help. Resp. All Chelsea Naval Hospital Records were sent to Virginia. |

I grew up in chelsea and after serving in the military I got
married and moved from Chelsea. But when people ask where I am from I
tell them from Chelsea. And what is amazing is for a small city the
amount of people that I meet throught the world who either lived in
Chelsea or currently live in Chelsea. Great City. |

being displaced about four times during its contruction. As you know
this ugly bridge ruined the City of Chelsea. Any info on |

I Grew up in Chelsea (Prattville area) Still think of it as home.
Graduated from Chelsea High in 1958. I just found this website and
was thrilled. |
|
I grew up in Chelsea and some of my fondest memories are from when
I was younger and living with my 3 bros. and my mom and dad. I love
this site..it is very informative. I recently visited Chelsea and
took a drive around the old neighborhood, (grew up on Reynolds Ave),
the old Chelsea High School, Cary Square, Bellingham Square...and
although I saw some improvements around the city, I found there is
still so much to do. There are many beautiful old buildings just
sitting there in need of some tlc. ie. Mary C. Burke School, the old
Police station...Also alot of old homes are literally falling apart.
Really quite sad, but it will always be home. |
|
This website is FANTASTIC! Thank you so much for putting it
together. I grew up in Chelsea. My grandfather, John Geyer, who died
in 1970 was the last living fireman who fought the 1908 Fire and my
father was a Chelsea fireman. I found this site accidently but I'm so
glad that I did. |
|
My father was in WWII and worked in the European Theatre as a
Medical Manager of the Hospital. I have the original Chelsea Record
article on him. His name is Jacob Rutstein. And my grandfather,
Edward Rood, was in WWI. Resp. Jacob Rutstein was personally know by the Chelsea City Historian. Information being researched. Edward Rood was the owner of The Blackstone Market which was at the corner of Broadway and Third Street. |
|
Lived in Prattville before leaving when I was 11 years old in
1957. Lived on Garland Street in the Big (at least to me!)White
House. I wish that there was more on-line content, in fact, I would
like see a complete Chelsea Record on-line. I miss Chelsea and still
consider it my home. |
|
I am looking for any information on Edward Willard, who was a
mayor of Chelsea for ten years in the early 1900s; I believe he was
also a representative in this same time period. I do not know the
exact dates of either term of service. I have not been able to find
his name in many of the Chelsea web sites. If there are any books on
the history of Chelsea which have any information on Edward, I might
be interested in purchasing them. Edward was my great-uncle. Resp. Edward Willard served as Mayor of Chelsea in the years 1901-02-03-04-05-06-07 and in 1913-14 and 1917-18. John Beck was elected mayor in 1908. April 1908 Chelsea devasted by fire. City put under the rule of a five man board of control 1908-12. Click here for more information. |

This is a very nice well constructed web site. I will be coming to
your city in the near future to do some genealogy searches on my
family, the Keough's and McHattons. |
|
I was interested in finding out about the Raymond Silver Mfg.
Company which I found out was located in your City. I am not sure if
they are still in existance, but would like know how to contact them
if they are. All attempts of trying to locate them online has turned
up little and brought me to you. Any information would be greatly
appreciated. Sincerely, Resp. Raymond Silver which was located on The Revere Beach Parkway at the corner of Washington Ave. moved out of the City years ago. The building is now an office complex. No further information. |

Is there someone that has a "seating chart" for
either/both of the Chelsea Cemeteries? My mom's kin (McGauley) all
lived and died in Chelsea. I need headstone data to help me to put
mom's lineage to paper. My kids might care, someday, too. Thanks. |

My name is Janice Cilluffo, I'm doing a family tree on my family.
I'm trying to locate my great aunt, who lived in Chelsea, Ma.of which
was her last listed residence on the 1930 census listing
(ancestry.com.) Her name was: Carole A. (Leidinger) Finn, she lived
in Malden, Ma. for many years before living in Chelsea, Ma. I have
her social security number (019-26-3918), birthdate: August 5, 1934.
I don't know the street address. She had I was told 5 kids, (of which
I don't have any names, nor if they were boys/girls). She did have a
brother George Alfred Leidinger who died Nov. 27, 2005 in Lynn, Ma.
Carole A. Finn died June 20, 1993 in Chelsea, Ma. Please, if you can
give me anymore information about Carole A. Finn, (birthcertificate,
death certificate, address where she lived, childrens
names/birthdates, etc.) I'd trully appreciate it greatly. Please
contact me if you can help me with information I'm searching for.
Also, birth announcements would be a great help to complete my family
tree! You can contact me: Janice Cilluffo Archangel12@adelphia.net |

I am a resident of Admirals Hill and I would like to purchase a
production of an Admirals Hill historic map, if there is such a thing. |

I drove by the old mary burke school recently and I was wondering

I just found out that actress Barbra Stanwyck was born in Chelsea
MA in 1907, name at birth Ruby Katherine Stevens child of Byron and
Catherine Mc Gee Stevens. I was just curiouse to know where abouts in
Chelsea such as an adress, as a resident of chelsea I find this
information fascinating. Any information would be nice and please
keep up the great work. It's great to be reminded of all the history
in our great city. This web site has made me proud to be a resident
of Chelsea. |
