Hello,
We have a painting that is thought to be Chelsea in the Great Fire. It is signed by Bruce Innis. Can you help us find if he was a resident of Chelsea?
Thank you.

Good Morning,
Last summer while doing research on an exhibit on the Story of the poem Evangeline Dr. Francoise Paradis contacted me about The Statues that were on the side of L'Assomption in Chelsea, Ma. placed by L'Assomption society in 1924. My home church St. Mary's in Marlboro and my Father's Home church, St. Joseph's, were both closed in 2004. The Society L'Assomption was founded in 1904 to help people retain their Acadian heritage and to help Acadian families when hardship arose due to sickness and death by providing financial help and insurance for the growing French community in Waltham and New England. L'Assomoption grew to over 10,000 by the late 40's. The company continues in Moncton N.B. to this day. In Thanksgiving of the society's success they started donating Statues of our lady to Acadian Churches in New England and in 1953 they placed one in front of St. Joseph's in Waltham, MA. in celebration of it's 50th anniversary of operation.

Fast forward to 2004 because the Statue was made of Soapstone. They came up to me to see if the Acadian Cultural Society (founded in 1985)to help Acadians to retain their culture, could somehow save this Statue in front of St. Joseph's. "I did" you can read about it at www.acadiancultural.org. Seeing fate that the Statues were reduce to I once again contacted the Archdiocese of Boston and was able to relocate the Statues to the Acadian village in Van Buren Maine. Visiting the Village last week the Blessed Mother has been placed in front of a working Chapel that Marist Fathers say Mass during the special. I can pass more info. on the story later. I sent this to inform you of some Chelsea history that may be lost.

Hi, I'm looking for info on Nicholas Stowers & family that came in 1629 on the Lyons Welp with the Sprague family & stayed & was presumeably buried at Rumney Marsh? I also have Tewksbury or Tukesbury & Sturgis at roughly the same time. One had a farm called Bryant Place; 1600's I believe. Thanks again,

I am looking for information about William S. Bartlet (his spelling), who was rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Chelsea in 1853 (or thereabouts) when he published a book entitled Frontier Missionary, which is a biography of Rev. Jacob Bailey, Loyalist Anglican clergyman who was banished from Kennebec, Maine, by a revolutionary committee of public safety for praying for the King and refusing to read the Declaration of Independence from the pulpit. Bailey ended up in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, where I now live. I am hoping to find information about Bartlet's life and education. Thank you very much.

Hello, I'm Jon Cesolini, a member of the Williamsville fire company in Northeastern Connecticut. It has been speculated that a 1922 Seagrave fire engine was purchased used from the Chelsea Fire Department somewhere before WWII. The only reason I am writing is that the 1931 photo of "engine #4" found on your fire department history site resembles distinctly a photograph I have of the Williamsville pumper mentioned. If you have any more information on that particular apparatus, or if you have any information on the disposition of it, or if I am simply completely wrong in my assumptions, any of that would help. Thank you,
Jon Cesolini, Williamsville FD

I belong to a group of descendants of 21st Battalion CEF soldiers. We honour their memory in several ways, one of which is a photo tribute website at http://21st-battalion-2.tripod.com/page1.html. On that site, we have over 1200 photos of the soldiers and their graves. Would it be possible for one of your members to take a photo of the memorial at the Chelsea High School which is close enough to read the name "Robert T Murray", as well as a photo to show the overall view of the memorial? I would like to place those photos on our website to honour Pte Murray's service in the 21st Battalion CEF. Of course credit would be given to your Historical Society on our credits page along with a link to this website. These photos could be emailed to the enclosed address at alloyd@kos.net. I thank you for considering this request.

Resp: Photos have been sent, Thank You.

Hi, I was born at Chelsea Naval in 1967. I was referred to Virginia, but I am not sure what that means. Where in Virginia are my birth records? I was born with a birthmark and taken away from my mother for 3 days. I am trying to find out what medical procedures they did just after birth.
Cheryl
email : ccmez@comcast.net

Resp: We are receiving a large number of request for birth records from the Naval Hospital. So far we have been able to determine that they must be obtained through the Navy Department. As soon as we are able to determine a more exact process for obtaining this information it will be posted on this website.

I am interested in the surname Newell and any connection it has to the town of Chelsea. Family legend has it that they owned land in the town. Evelyn fidler cefidler@nb.sympatico.ca
email : cefidler@nb.sympatico.ca

Resp: There is a large amonut of information on the name Newell and their association with Chelsea dating back to the 1600's. The name is also spelled Newhall in many records. The earliest recorded bit of information concerns Thomas Newell, who on October 26, 1686 brought suit against John Wiswall, for defamation against his wife Hannah.

I am researching information on my 3xGreat Grandparents, Francis & Catherine Yelland, who lived in Chelsea for a time from about 1845 to 1859. A couple of questions:

1) I find them in the 1850 census, living there with 1 child my 2X great grandmother and a 17 year old apprentice. Is there any way to find out (from the census codes) where their home was located. I understand some sections of Chelsea from that period, may have become part of Revere? or Winthrop?

2) Francis Yelland was also a poet. He wrote a book of poems entitled: The Exile's Law and Other Poetry published in Boston in 1855. Do you by any chance have a copy of this book, or any other information regarding Francis or Catherine Yelland? Resp: Check the archives at the Chelsea Public Library. All records of Chelsea are kept there.

3) What were the names of Chelsea newspapers from @1850-60? Are they available for viewing? And would any of these publications have the initials C___ A____. (Francis referred to this possible publication in one of his poems.) Resp: "C" "A" may be the Chelsea Advertiser. The Newspapers page lists every newspaper that ever published in Chelsea. Click here

4) Where is the Chelsea Historical Society located and is it open to the public? If so what are the hours? Resp: Contact the Cary House, Chelsea, Ma. Free tours by request.

Thanks much for any information on this you might be able to provide...

I enjoyed your site very much. The photo's that you show of homes on Washington Avenue, does anyone know the house numbers? My GreatGreat Grandparents lived at 204 Washington Avenue from around 1903 till the mid 1920's. It would be great if one your photo's was of their home. Other photo's that would interest me would be of some of the other homes they lived in 1886-131 Chester Avenue, 1887-1888 or longer at 35 Spencer, 1892-13 Silk Street, and 1899 - 13 Heard Street. Also, what schools would have been in the Spencer/Washington Avenue area (Grammer schools) I know, many questions. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Donna Murphy.

What a fantastic website! I came upon it while looking for the name of the order of nuns who taught me at Our Lady of Assumption School, and I look forward to learning more about Chelsea. I was born there in 1971 and lived there until 1992, living on Broadway, Spencer Ave., Chester Ave., Heard Street and finally Lash Street in Chelsea. I went to Mary C. Burke for kidnergarten, Assumption for middle school, and after getting kicked out of St. Rose High School I attended CHS for a couple months, then went to Northeast Vocational, where I graduated. I, too, feel that Chelsea is a haunted city, and I certainly continue to be haunted by it. I now live in California, and have few family members left in the city. I wrote a book about my rather troubled experience of growing up in Chelsea called The Chelsea Whistle.

Resp: They may have been the nuns of the Holy Union of the Sacred Heart who were the first nuns to teach at the school. See Asumption Church webpage.

I love the website! My great-grandparents came to Chelsea in the mid 1800's and I am also from Chelsea. The names I am researching are Sullivan, Hannabury, Porter and Twomey. I noticed that there is a writer Elizabeth Porter Gould that is from Chelsea. I found out that she wrote for the New England Magazine and the Bay State Monthly from 1884-1894. Do you have any more information on her Thanks!

I grew up in Chelsea and graduated from the high school in 1990. I loved that building. I was trying to remember the quote carved upon the building exterior... force greater than power, wisdom greater than knowledge. Does anyone remember? Perhaps a photo exists somewhere. I would be grateful to know, as it meant so much to me while a student there (just before BU took control and when it was hard being a student there). Those words bore into my psyche and really carried me through.

Resp: The second cemetary referred to is probably the Naval Hospital Cemetary. In 1918, the Naval Hospital ceased burial in it's cemetery on the hospital reservation due to overcrowding. Arrangements were made to purchase an area of the Woodlawn Cemetery for burial from the Naval Hospital. Exhuming the remains for transfer from the hospital cemetery to Woodlawn began early Spring and was completed on August 5, 1920.

I'm looking to find out the business of Nathan W. Snow of Chelsea City in the period 1870 - 1880. His daughter Annie Constance Snow (1870-1921) lived in the famous Tryon colony down here in North Carolina circa 1900 to 1920, and we have been able here to learn nothing about the Mass. background of Miss Snow. I would like to know about a house on Garland St. #75, I lived there in my early life and was told that it originally had a still built into it during Prohibition. I was told that there were a lot of stills built into houses in Chelsea at that time. Also, I understand that this house was built for a mayor, which one I do not know and would like to find the name. I attended Prattville School in the 50's, my mother graduated from CHS. My grandfather, Edward Rood, worked as director of the old age program, then went on to be head of welfare. Thank you!

I was fortunate enough to visit the Gov. Bellingham-Cary House today, and I just wanted to commend those who ran the open house. It was a wonderful experience taking a step back in time like that. I really did feel transported to a different place. The tour guides were extremely friendly and knowledgable. It is unfortunate this house cannot be open more regularly, but it is understandable. They have a tremendous undertaking, with all the restoration the home still needs. I can't wait for the next event though, and I look forward to seeing some of the treasures they have locked away until further restoration is done. Again, thank you to the Governor Bellingham-Cary House Association for a lovely, informative afternoon.

Nice web site about Chelsea. I was born and raised in Chelsea and so were my parents. My parents always told me about that bridge that cut thru the city. They had to move four times during construction. The 1908 fire and the bridge cutting thru the heart of the city ruined Chelsea. It is sad to think that Chelsea had all this misfortune. If you noticed the bridge takes sharpe left around Williams school instead of going straight out near Carter street thru Everett. My parents always said the politicans at the time sold Chelsea out.

Hi, Chelsea, I'm Fred Butler who used to live in Saugus and who has a lot of family ties from the area. One of my ancestors was Nathaniel Oliver who married Martha Hobbs on 30 Nov 1709. I'm looking for the death and burial of my great grandfahter Charles J. Wagner b. 1855 d. ? I have his death as Aug 3, 1894 but there's no death certificate for anyone by that name in that year. My cousin has his death-form for a death record, Chelsea, MA (never filled out or filed) died at Marine Hospital, Chelsea, MA with that date for his death. I'm beginning to believe that it was a false document and that Charles lived beyond 1894. Also, I recently read in The Burning of Chelsea that Increase Mather stayed at the Praft House to evade Gov. Andros. Does this Praft House still exist? I got the impression there were two very early Praft Houses, the other being visited by George Washington and demolished in the 1800's. Born, raised and educated in Chelsea, my family tree consisted of the Slotnick/Rosenfield/Brodie families, which resided in Chelsea from 1885-2000 ... 115 years!! Joseph Slotnick arrived in Chelsea in 1885 and started the J. Slotnick Contracting Company in the 1890s which just recently ceased operations. The Brodie's arrived in the early 1900's and own/operated The Star Department Store on Broadway through the 1930's. The cornerstone and mentor of our family was Philip Rosenfield. The Rosenfield's arrived in Chelsea in the late1890's approximately. Philip started the Philip Rosenfield Scrap Iron Co. on 88 Elm Street. In 1946, he founded Phil's Glass Company located on Carter Street, drirectly across from the old Chelsea Stadium. Hello, I was born in the Chelsea Naval Hospital in 1957. I am trying to find out where all the medical records from the hospital went. Can you point me in the right direction?
Cheryl Mesropian - email: cmesropian@kidoriginals.com

Resp. All Chelsea Naval Hospital Records were sent to Virginia.

Excellent web site about Chelsea. Well put together. I would like more info on Mystic River Bridge. My parents always talked about being displaced about four times during its contruction. As you know this ugly bridge ruined the City of Chelsea. Any info on

I grew up in Chelsea and some of my fondest memories are from when I was younger and living with my 3 bros. and my mom and dad. I love this site..it is very informative. I recently visited Chelsea and took a drive around the old neighborhood, (grew up on Reynolds Ave), the old Chelsea High School, Cary Square, Bellingham Square...and although I saw some improvements around the city, I found there is still so much to do. There are many beautiful old buildings just sitting there in need of some tlc. ie. Mary C. Burke School, the old Police station...Also alot of old homes are literally falling apart. Really quite sad, but it will always be home.

This website is FANTASTIC! Thank you so much for putting it together. I grew up in Chelsea. My grandfather, John Geyer, who died in 1970 was the last living fireman who fought the 1908 Fire and my father was a Chelsea fireman. I found this site accidently but I'm so glad that I did.

My father was in WWII and worked in the European Theatre as a Medical Manager of the Hospital. I have the original Chelsea Record article on him. His name is Jacob Rutstein. And my grandfather, Edward Rood, was in WWI.

Resp. Jacob Rutstein was personally know by the Chelsea City Historian. Information being researched. Edward Rood was the owner of The Blackstone Market which was at the corner of Broadway and Third Street.

Lived in Prattville before leaving when I was 11 years old in 1957. Lived on Garland Street in the Big (at least to me!)White House. I wish that there was more on-line content, in fact, I would like see a complete Chelsea Record on-line. I miss Chelsea and still consider it my home.

I am looking for any information on Edward Willard, who was a mayor of Chelsea for ten years in the early 1900s; I believe he was also a representative in this same time period. I do not know the exact dates of either term of service. I have not been able to find his name in many of the Chelsea web sites. If there are any books on the history of Chelsea which have any information on Edward, I might be interested in purchasing them. Edward was my great-uncle.
Mal Chase - email : patandmalchase@hughes.net

Resp. Edward Willard served as Mayor of Chelsea in the years 1901-02-03-04-05-06-07 and in 1913-14 and 1917-18. John Beck was elected mayor in 1908. April 1908 Chelsea devasted by fire. City put under the rule of a five man board of control 1908-12. Click here for more information.

This is a very nice well constructed web site. I will be coming to your city in the near future to do some genealogy searches on my family, the Keough's and McHattons.

Is there someone that has a "seating chart" for either/both of the Chelsea Cemeteries? My mom's kin (McGauley) all lived and died in Chelsea. I need headstone data to help me to put mom's lineage to paper. My kids might care, someday, too. Thanks.

My name is Janice Cilluffo, I'm doing a family tree on my family. I'm trying to locate my great aunt, who lived in Chelsea, Ma.of which was her last listed residence on the 1930 census listing (ancestry.com.) Her name was: Carole A. (Leidinger) Finn, she lived in Malden, Ma. for many years before living in Chelsea, Ma. I have her social security number (019-26-3918), birthdate: August 5, 1934. I don't know the street address. She had I was told 5 kids, (of which I don't have any names, nor if they were boys/girls). She did have a brother George Alfred Leidinger who died Nov. 27, 2005 in Lynn, Ma. Carole A. Finn died June 20, 1993 in Chelsea, Ma. Please, if you can give me anymore information about Carole A. Finn, (birthcertificate, death certificate, address where she lived, childrens names/birthdates, etc.) I'd trully appreciate it greatly. Please contact me if you can help me with information I'm searching for. Also, birth announcements would be a great help to complete my family tree! You can contact me: Janice Cilluffo Archangel12@adelphia.net
Thankyou!!

Greetings,
Steve Carlson with Boston National Historical Park recommended that I contact the Chelsea Historical Society. I'm a historian with the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places and Maritime Heritage Programs in Washington, DC. We are developing a travel itinerary for our website (www.cr.nps.gov/nr) highlighting the Maritime History of Massachusetts. This itinerary will include approximately 90 maritime sites along the coast of Massachusetts, and will be launched on our website later this summer. As you might well imagine, several places in Boston are part of this itinerary. We've written descriptions for all the properties, and I am now collecting relatively recent color images for each site. Steve recommended that the Chelsea Historical Society might be able to assist me a photo or two for Naval Hospital Boston Historic District (Chelsea Naval Hospital). Ideally, I'm looking for a general exterior photo of the hospital.
Thanks, in advance, for any help you might be able to provide me.
